Pelham 123 why is the original a classic of its genre and the new version is not?

I've just watched both versions of Pelham 123 and the original (1974) is far superior. But why? Is it the script, the actors, the direction. The original is grittier and more realistic whereas the new version is slick and fun but lacking something. What is it lacking? Interested to hear your comments.
